I'm ashamed to admit, I study EU and Europe and politics and didn't know this!!

Maybe Maria is right. Maybe they are talking about an economic region. There are euroregions and EU believes that these kind of unions are benefic for Europe. This means that each region can take its own choices and develop in its best interests. It means that such a region shares a bit of authonomy. It is also more entitled to solve regional issues because the countries forming such an euroregion understand the existent problems better.

For example there is a sort of union (I'm sorry, I can't find the proper words in English) between parts of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine and Romania. It is called Carpathian Foundation/Euroregion. It aims to preserve and develop peaceful relations between ethnic groups living near borders or develop the infrastructure and economy of the area. It also aims to preserve the mountains and take care of the people living in those areas. Whatever, it has many attributes but little power and small successes.

There are similar projects. There is a debate concerning this. If this can be the future of Europe's organization or not, if they are helpful and beneficial or not..blah..blah..

Maybe this is what's all about....

Moreover, after WWI and WWII Europe learned a lesson: never change borders and limits through force or without consent.

I think you shouldn't worry about this....although you can rarely tell or forecast what will happen...

I really enjoyed reading your last post. Things are calmer now here, and you are right, that´s what´s this is all about.
Some people here jumped to hasty conclusions, because this country has lived with the shadow of Spain hovering over us for centuries.
We are sure now that there is going to be a serious debate about this. And the fact is that almost seventy per cent of the portuguese population would like to live in a region called Iberia ( but they ´d like to remain portuguese. )

It must be , yes.
This country has lots of economic problems and there are always those who feel that it would be easier to become a kind of autonomous region of Spain.
I don´t agree. I am very patriotic. This country and its people have suffered so much to maintain our independence that I get sick eachtime this subject is brought up..

I DON´T WANT TO BOTHER ABOUT Politics. But, O. K. the situation here is bad, more than bad.. and the people is getting very angry because we are making lots of sacrifices and we are getting nothing in return..
And our government is suffering from lack of tolerance.. because they are not accepting any criticism
And that is very bad indeed.Peple are not willing to sacrifice democratic ideals because of economic oligarchies .We don´t want an economic dictatorship..I hope you understand what i mean..

That´s why this subject of an economic partnership with Spain has been brought up..

Democracy and freedom are the most important values..People should be
alert not to be cheated out of them ( I am sorry for my rant..

It´s about lack of freedom..It´s about a writer who lives in a police state and is condemned because of his believes and the stuff he writes.It´s a call for freedom..

Right!The press here has given a lot of attention to the fact..They even wrote an article in El Pais, with the title! Iberia, capital Lisboa!
People think that we , our countries, already have a prosperous economic partnership. There are lots of families that have portuguese and spanish members, lots of portuguese that work in Spain and lots of Spaniards that work in Portugal.And this should be enough...
Bear in mind that Saramago has lived in Spain for the last 15 years and his wife is a spanish jornalist!!So...

Our partnership is already quite extensive.. Lots of portuguese women that live near the spanish border prefer to give birth to their babies in your country , Maria..., so we are very close indeed..
Political commentators and intelectuals are very angry at Saramago How could he???? they keep asking... He must have gone mad... Most of us admit that he must have forgotten his country by now.., because he hardly ever comes back here.

Now, for those who happen to looooove theatre, like me..LOOOOOOL!!!

It is also a kind of horror story ( just in the line od the moonspell Gothic music ) and it was chosen and translated into portuguese by best theatre actor Marco..
SINOPSIS (In a police state, a writer and his family are arrested , because the facts that he writes about in his stories, begin to happen in a gruesome way one after the other...)
It was a great hit in the States and in the UK and in Portugal.. I enjoyed it so much that i intend to see it again.. :kataus:because it is going to be performed again...here in this country..

I don't know if any of you are One Tree Hill fans anymore but just for the record season 7 is out ....I am a huge fan of the show, I just love it. I was very happy when I heard it got voted for another season but then ...Lucas and Peyton are not in it anymore ...I love OTH for all the characters but let's not forget Lucas is the LEADING role...What kind of OTH is one without Leyton? ....anyway I'm gonna watch it the same because like I said the other characters are still part of Tree Hill, Leyton or no Leyton
