I miss some parts - the beginning is not so important - the journalist talks how she fixed the date and the hour for the interview, and how cold it was on the ice rink.

"We met Maxim. he's one of those people who seem to be always in good humour. Albena comes, smiles and steps on the ice. The couple start the training. Even though it's very cold, when Albena and Max skate in front of you, you forget about everything else. They look very nice in the way they move next to each other. I see that the figure skating for Albena is not only work, but also a true happiness.
Next to us is sitting a very elegant lady - the mother of the world champion Mrs. Silvia Tsvetanova. Albena is very attached to her and asked her to come to their trainings, when they train in Bulgaria, so they could spend more time together. She asks her if she likes the music of the new programs, the new lifts. We talk with Mrs. Tsvetanova about the visit in Bulgaria of Condoliza Rice (I'm not sure about the spelling ) - the State secretary of US, who is a A&M fan and was very happy when they met her on the airport. She encouraged them to not retire and keep winning.
We hear the song of Emil Dimitrov Ako si dal (If you have given). The lyrics suit so well to their life on the ice: Nobody can take away from you the love of the people. Even though A&M were underestimated from the judges, the audience has always loved them and supported them."

One day with Albena and Maxim


It is pointless to begin my introduction of Albena and Maxim with the reminding that they are the two times figure skating champions from Calgary and Tokyo. I am also sure that many people sacrificed their sleep to watch their performance in Calgary that was broadcasted at 2 in the morning. They both completely deserve this sacrifice because they sacrificed many things themselves in order to become champions: vacation, meeting with friends, good and solid meal or their hobby – to visit museums.


Meeting on the ice.


We arranged with Albena to meet on the ice rink at Winter Palace around 11 AM. She is the person who manages to organize their daily engagements. We’ve called each other several times because the schedule of the world champions was changing constantly. They train twice during the day. The first one is from 10:30 till noon; the second one is from 1630 to 1800.
We,ve arrived at the place. We were early but we couldn’t wait to meet them. We got introduced to Maxim. He is from those people that are always in a good mood. Albena came soon .She smiled and went on the ice. They both began to skate. It is cold. Even my pen stopped writing so I had to continue with pencil. No matter how cold is when Albena and Maxim are skating they warm up everything around themselves. The way they glide together looks very beautiful. When she heard the music Albena started to show up all the emotions. I could see that for her the skating is not only work but also a happiness.

The love of the mother

I am sitting on the bench next to a very elegant lady, the mother of the world champion – Sylvia Tzvetanova. Albena is very much attached to her and wants her to be present at every training while they are in Bulgaria so they can spent more time together. She constantly asks her if she likes the music for the new compositions or the new lifts. We were talking about the visit of the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last year. Apparently, she was a fan of Albena and Maxim and was very happy when they greeted her at the airport. She told them that she held her fingers crossed for them during the World Championship in Canada and encouraged them not to quit their career and to continue to win.

We heard the song of Emil Dimitrov “If you have given” which they used for one of their compositions made for shows and galas. The text is very appropriate for their life on the ice : “Nobody can take away from you the love ,the love of the people.”

No matter how much they were unappreciated by the judges, the love of the audience was a great support and gave them the strength to continue. As we discussed with Albena’s mother this love was very strong. Suddenly Maxim started to dance kazachok .Took one chair and began to skate with it. He always creates something funny and entertains everybody around him. He shared with me that during the season he is very lazy but I didn’t notice such a thing. The training ends. While Albena is telling us what they were going to do later, Maxim took one marking cone and used it as a megaphone:”Maxim is going to the dentist. .Albena I’ll be waiting for you in the dressing room”

Wake up at 5 AM.

Their first training was from 1030 AM till noon but when they are preparing for competition in America, they get up at 5 in the morning and at 6 AM they are already at the rink .Take a break from 0900 to 0940 and again training until 1130. After a break at the dinner, warm up and training off the ice and from 1230 until 1330 -1400 continue on the ice. Having a brunch at 1500. Albena first started the conversation about the nutrition. “We never have breakfast. In Bulgaria we eat when we have time .Yesterday for example we ate for the first time at 2200 .The previous day we had a little time to eat in the afternoon”. I believe her because she ate a small hot dog at the coffee shop while we were talking and didn’t have anything else until 2000.

Albena went home to refresh herself and put a make up and Maxim went to his dentist appointment. “I am all about the repair , the human repair” jokes Maxim.

Maxim is preparing the new apartment

At 1430 we are at Albena’s house, to be more specific her mother’s house in Borovo. The apartment is arranged with style and it looks like a winner of interior design. Maxim is furnishing their apartment where the star couple will be living but until is ready they will live in the small mansard above her mother's apartment. Maxim joked later that they will change the house when the toy gifts from their fans block their way to the bed. And they will keep their current apartment just for the toys. “When I see a toy I could tell who and at which competition gave it to us .Each of them is a memory.” Told us Maxim.

A bet for a lift

The three ladies of the house – mother and two daughters figure skaters are sitting for a while at the table before they leave for their engagements. Maxim is coming with a huge ball for their future Exhibition. Albena puts her make up for 5 minutes and tells us that she is always doing it fast because of the lack of time. Albena and Maxim are searching on the videotape and the computer about some old lift because they made a bet. Their phones are ringing constantly. The star couple really doesn’t have a free time. We asked them if they can take a nap in the afternoon and they both start laughing. “We don’t even have time for our professional engagements and to meet with friends. Recently we went to bar “Sinatra” and it was very nice “tells us Albena about one of their very rare moments for pleasure. “ I personally like to go to clubs but not to discothèques .The music there is to loud and pinches my head” explained Maxim. Their biggest desire is to see the Thracian golden treasure in the Museum of History and wished they had time to do it. They shared that everywhere around the world they like to go to museums. When Albena was a little girl she wanted to become an archeologist.
